Not Art for Art’s Sake

Art should first appeal to you through your senses, and it must grab your attention in some way. Give a print a moment to sink in to your subconscious – some works are intriguing in subtle ways but don’t get caught in the trap of trying to figure out “what the artist means” – focus instead on what the work says to you.

The best art has meaning beyond just an image; perhaps it will bring you to tears, make you laugh, or remind you of something you’d thought you’d forgotten. It can also stand out in a crowd, and dare to be different. Most importantly, good art should be understandable to you, although it may make you think in ways you never expected to.

Your decision about the beauty, or lack of it, in a particular work of art is instinctive and natural. In fact, you probably won’t even have to make that decision, you’ll just either be captivated by a piece of art or you won’t.

If the print creates feelings of fear, anger, reflection, comfort or humour, then the artist has truly connected. This is expression…

How does a particular image affect you; does it create emotion?

Does it make you reflect deeply, remind you of the love of a woman or man you once knew, or after another hard day’s work, transport you to the soothing solitude of nature or your imagination? Does it remind you of fond, maybe distant, memories or the warmth of your family and home? Visualise this with your music and your favourite wine, and it’s completely feasible.

Surely, this should be your reward at the end of your day?

Or a print in the office?

Or a print in your office?

To my way of thinking, art can inspire and provoke new thoughts on the hundredth viewing just as much as the first.

For the most part, good prints are meant to be lived with and deliberately avoid expending their power in an instant. It may not be possible to ‘get it’ at first glance, but give it time and you’ll really to get to know it.

I’m sure there are songs and movies that have become firm favourites but did you really notice the detail and little nuances until you’ve heard them a few times? In today’s mad rush you are constantly exposed to instant gratification, crafted to communicate ideas quickly without too much effort to the recipient – it’s now time to slow down and smell the flowers along the way!

“A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts and inspires”

Hedy Lamarr (Austrian-born American actress and inventor)
